           Cuba’s first city showcases

               its impressive

               natural surroundings

E xploring the first city founded in Cuba, Baracoa,

can be an excellent reason for a trip to the
largest of the Caribbean islands. Its original
name, given by its founder Diego Velázquez on
August 15, 1511, was Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
de Baracoa, and thus began the history of Cuba’s
                     first capital and first bishopric.

Baracoa is located about a thousand kilometers east
of Havana, and its cathedral houses the so-called
Santa Cruz de Parra, one of the 29 crosses placed by
Christopher Columbus in the New World, and the
only one that has survived to this day.
